Characterization of finfish fisheries in Sanniang Bay and its adjacent waters, Qinzhou, Guangxi , China .

Over 400 families live in close vicinity to Sanniang Bay and a considerable number of these families rely heavily on the fishing. Very few information on the fishing industry in this bay is available. Informal interviews with local fishermen suggested intense fisheries both near-shore and off-shore. Despite its heavy fishing pressure, Sanniang Bay has one of the least human-affected and important Chinese white dolphin ( Sousa chinensis ) populations in the Chinese waters. There has been increasing effort in regulating dolphin-watching activities, but relatively little attention has been given to the fishing industry in this fishing-based village. This study aims at providing baseline information on species composition, relative abundance and fish length in the fisheries. The information may have significant implications to fishery management and in conjunction with the conservation of the Chinese white dolphin.
